The governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, resigned Thursday morning after two weeks of demonstrations of citizens dismissed because of the leak of messages of homophobic and macho discussions between him and his main collaborators.
Thousands of people celebrated in front of the governor's residence in Old San Juan, after its announcement on Facebook, published Wednesday night.
"Even if I expected to fulfill the mandate for which people had elected me democratically, today, I believe that the continuation of this position threatens the success we have achieved. "Roselló said in a recorded message in which he made it clear that he would resign on 2 August.

Rosselló, 44, son of a former governor, is the first head of government who resigns in the modern history of Puerto Rico, a Commonwealth of the United States.

Rosselló's announcement came after politicians threatened political trials and after thousands of people invaded the streets demanding his departure.

The wait was tense at a time when dozens of policemen armed with riot gear left the governor's residence and threatened protesters with complaining about the crowd: "We want peace and they want war!" they shouted.
The filtering of insulting conversations between the governor and 11 of his badociates, as well as the social fatigue due to corruption, mismanagement and the slow recovery after the pbadage of Hurricane Maria, occurred almost two years ago years, provoked the reaction of the citizens, two weeks ago, he mbadively returned to the streets to ask his resignation.
