Alarming figure: Uruguay, the country with the highest coronavirus death rate last week

MONTEVIDEO.- In the midst of the advance of the pandemic in the region, Uruguay topped the global list of daily coronavirus deaths relative to its population last week, as compiled by the Our World in Data site. The small South American country registers 16.82 deaths per million inhabitants in the average of the last seven days.

Globally, Uruguay – which had been one of the countries that best controlled the pandemic in 2020 – is followed North Macedonia (15.36); Hungary (13.89), which has recorded a sharp drop in recent days; Paraguay (11.64), and Croatia (10.96).

Uruguay’s figure is significant compared to the rest of the region, as the South American average is 8.76 deaths per million people last week.

According to data from the Uruguayan Ministry of Health, Since the health emergency was declared on March 13, 1,873,060 coronavirus tests have been processed and 213,449 positive cases have been recorded. So far they are 2,972 deaths diagnosed with Covid-19 in the country, which has about 3.5 million inhabitants.

There are currently 25,971 active cases, of which 539 are in intensive care units. Of the total of confirmed positive cases, 6,845 correspond to health personnel.
