Alberto Fernández denounced the Covax fund for the distribution and the shortage of vaccines: “It is insufficient”

In a context of lack of vaccines against the coronavirus where he was forced to take restrictive measures which cause serious political problems due to political and social resistance, Alberto Fernandez questioned the initiative Covax of World Health Organization (WHO), asserted that doses and treatments for the coronavirus “have not been distributed equitably” internationally and urged developed countries and international organizations to “perfecting the global health architecture ”.

During his speech at the Ibero-American summit held virtually in Andorra, the President launched: “The current assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic shows us that inclusive innovation is not common. The auspicious results obtained by the international scientific community in the development of vaccines and treatments against the virus have not been fairly distributed ”.

The Ibero-American summit meeting aims for better access to vaccines and post-COVID-19 recovery funding for Latin America at a time when the pandemic is complicating the region. Due to the health crisis, most of the representatives of the 22 countries of the Latin American bloc and the Iberian Peninsula participated remotely in the meeting, which is based in the city of Soldeu.

Alberto Fernández participated in Olivos with Felipe Solá. From there, he remarked: “The universal distribution of vaccines plays a key role in post-pandemic recovery. The COVAX initiative, although valid, is insufficient and must be strengthened overcome the difficulties we encounter in supplying developing countries, low and middle income ”.

And he called for “to improve the global health architecture”, through the Adoption of a resolution on the reform of the emergency preparedness and response system of the World Health Organization ”.

Argentina imported a total of 7.2 million doses, of which only 1,082,400 – produced by AstraZeneca – went through the Covax mechanism. This Sunday, the Ministry of Health began with the distribution of 799,000 most recent doses, produced in South Korea by one of the Oxford / AstraZeneca laboratories under this WHO program.

The President called on countries to “adopt solutions in the multilateral system” and called on WHO to “recognize and standardize different vaccines and drugs”. In addition, he called on the World Trade Organization (WTO) to work on a system that “by recognizing patents, actively promotes an efficient licensing system which guarantees the global supply of vaccines on the basis of a production chain that maximizes the manufacturing capabilities of every corner of the planet and effectively integrates it to achieve global immunity and an effective control system for future pandemics ” .

“It is essential to deepen technology transfer and international financial cooperation, without exclusions”, Tenuous. And he recalled the presentation made by Argentina with Spain of a special declaration on “Access to external financing to fight the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Finally, Alberto Fernández quoted Pope Francis and asked: “We do not resign ourselves to being powerless commentators on the tragedy of a collapsing civilization. Let us be united, united and organized protagonists of a civilization which is rebuilding itself to integrate everyone ”.
