Alert in Russia for the invasion of polar bears "aggressive" in a village

When sea ice melts, animals are forced to leave their natural habitat in search of food. This is how a group of aggressive polar bears invaded the Arctic Archipelago Nueva Zembla, located in northeastern Russia, where about 3,000 people live.

"I have been living in Nueva Zembla since 1983 and I have never witnessed such a mbadive invasion of polar bears," said Jigancha Mousin, chief of the archipelago administration, in a statement.

About 52 polar bears frequently walk in Beluchia Guba, the largest city of this archipelago where there is a Russian military base. In some cases, animals have "aggressive behaviour", said Alexander Minaiev, the deputy chief of administration in the statement.

"They attack people and enter buildings housing and services. Between six and ten bears are permanently on the territory of the people, "denounced Minaiev.

According to the Russian official, "people are afraid to leave home and parents are afraid that their children will go to school alone". After the mammal invasion, the authorities were forced to order the "state of emergency".

Polar bears have been affected by global warming and melting of the Arctic, forcing them to spend more time off the ice looking for food. In Russia, they are clbadified as endangered species and it is forbidden to chase them.

At the moment, the authorities are trying to expel polar bears with patrol vehicles and dogs. "But these measures do not have the desired effect," the statement added.

For this reason, officials have warned that they might have to take more drastic measures protect the villagers. In the worst case, they indicated that the only alternative would be to sacrifice them.
