An Argentine pediatrician won a gold medal in Switzerland for a key invention for parents – 22/04/2019

Year after year, the Swiss exhibition Geneva Inventions brings together some of the most innovative creations in the world. The 47th edition is held recently in Geneva, with 540 participants evaluated by a jury of 88 experts.

Argentine science has won one of the biggest prizes. It was thanks to the pediatrician neonatologist Lelis Hayipandelli. "Dr. Lelis" (as her patients know her) got the gold medal in the category "Didactic Materials and Methods" for his "Observation Set for the Neurological Development of the Baby" (or Baby escape).

With the advice of Argentine Inventors Forum and the Argentine School of Inventors, Hayipandelli worked on a system of neurodevelopmental badessment of children up to 2 yearswhich does not act as a diagnosis but as a guide. The goal is to help parents understand the stages of infant growth, treat them, and consult the doctors on time.

Sets (or suitcases) consist of different daily play items and a stimulation, a USB key with videos and an explanatory book, so that everyone can use it at home.

There is two kits, one for babies 0 to 12 months and another for those 12 to 24 months old. The first includes fabrics, hoops, mugs, buckets, bells, pressure games, leaves and colored pencils; the second, acrylics, tubes, wooden sticks, geometric figures and painting elements.

Through a series of positions and easy workout exercises, parents can observe the auditory, visual, motor and cognitive performance of minors. The condition is that they are in a comfortable position, without hunger, without sleep, in a pleasant environment, away from distractions such as television and radio.

The task leads 40 to 50 minutes and the idea is that both parties take it as a pleasure, through which the baby can come in contact with his environment and that adults learn. It is recommended to use the kit daily, or once or twice a week, depending on the stage.

The creation of Hayipandelli contributes to early medical screening – in the first few months – of the autism spectrum disorder, the deficit of attention and other conditions of neurobiological origin, which usually take years to discern. It is particularly useful for premature children or with difficulties at birth.

For the moment, production is reduced and sold via the Internet. They expect to have more investors and distributors to reach more families.

The development is the result of the experience of the doctor in the office, since she graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1998. She is currently visiting her clinic and the Suizo Clinic in Argentina, as well as the Otamendi Clinic Neonatology Unit.
