An earthquake in Antarctica raised fears of a tsunami in Chile – telam

A 7.1 degree earthquake on the Richter scale was reported near the Chilean O’Higgins base in Antarctica, raising fears of a tsunami.

A tsunami alert, which was issued to alert exclusively Chilean Antarctic bases, was triggered due to a breakdown of cell phones for the rest of the population and caused fear, especially among those vacationing on the central coast .

Through cell phones, a notification came from the National Emergency Office (ONEMI), in which a “state of precaution” was declared.

The message said that the entire coastal area should be abandoned.

However, the agency should have immediately apologized for the error, the ANSA news agency said.

The second earthquake reached a magnitude of 5.5 Richter and was located 11 kilometers east of Farellones in the mountain range.

At the moment, no damage or casualties are reported.
