A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Croatia on Tuesday and caused buildings to collapse in the city of Petrinja, located in the center of the country. Again the number of injured is unknown.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that the earthquake, which took place at a depth of 10 km around 11:30 GMT and was of magnitude 6.2, it was strongly felt also about 50 km from the epicenter, in the capital Zagreb.

Rescuers and the army were deployed to search for possible residents trapped in the rubble of damaged buildings.

The quake came a day after another smaller earthquake in Petrinja which caused damage to buildings. In March, a 5.3 earthquake shook the Croatian capital, causing extensive property damage.

In Slovenia, where the earthquake was also felt, The Krsko nuclear power plant was shut down preventively to avoid a greater tragedy. “I can confirm the precautionary closure” of the plant, said spokeswoman Ida Novak Jerele.

According to the STA news agency, this is a “normal procedure in the event of a strong earthquake”. The Krsko power station has been in operation since 1983 and its 700 megawatt reactor is the only one in Slovenia to share the nuclear site with Croatia.
