An orangutan who was shot 74 times in a "wild attack", was blinded by injuries, a week after her baby died of starvation, reports the British newspaper Mirror.

Rescuers discovered the 30-year-old primate, now called Hope, with 74 balls in his body, nestled on the ground in the Aceh forests, Indonesia, on March 9th. He had been hit several times during an unprovoked "wild attack", environment advocates said.

Her one month old baby has collapsed next to her, severely dehydrated and malnourished after being unable to fend for itself in the oppressive heat of the tropics. He died shortly after being taken with his mother to a rehabilitation center in North Sumatra. And a week later, they confirmed that Hope She was blinded by the brutal attack.

X-rays showed four lozenges of compressed air to the left eye and two to the right, according to the Daily Mail.

Sapto Aji Prabowo, director of the government-run nature conservation agency in Aceh on the island of Sumatra, said that the mother of the orangutan had suffered fractures, bruises and leg cuts. "She was seriously injured and her son finally died of serious nutritional deficiencies and trauma, and real barbarians tortured them," she said.
