Another employee of the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, claimed to have been the victim of sexual harassment, and claims politician inappropriately touched her at her official residence in late 2020, becoming the sixth woman to accuse him of this type of behavior.
As reported by local media Union of times This Tuesday, which does not reveal the identity of the new alleged victim, the event took place after the woman was summoned to the official residence for work matters.
The newspaper also noted that The New York Attorney General’s Office has already been made aware of this new allegation, while the governor’s office was informed on Monday.
Minutes after the news broke to the media, Cuomo, 63, participated in a press conference call to offer an update on the state of the coronavirus response in New York City, in which he said he ‘he was unaware of the new charge.
“I have not been informed of any other charges. As I said last week, it’s very simple: I never touched anyone inappropriately, ”Cuomo said, who also pointed out that no woman had told him “at that point that he made them uncomfortable”.
The governor also stressed that he “respects” the investigation into the charges ordered by New York Attorney General Letitia James and asserted that every woman has the right to publicly denounce a fact, but insisted on the fact. that before making a decision, it must be settled the inquiries.
The new accusation comes a day after James announced the names of the two people who will lead the investigation team into the sexual harassment allegations, who mainly come from young women he has worked with in recent years.
The accumulation of cases further weakens the position of the governor, in power for ten years and whose mandate expires in 2022.
Considered by many a hero in the fight against the pandemic in 2020, Cuomo, one of America’s most influential governors, is now the subject of many resignation requests, including from the Democratic field.
Several of her party colleagues in New York called on her to resign, while on Monday the Republican minority in the New York Legislature announced it would begin Cuomo’s impeachment process (“Accused“, in English).
Likewise, the governor faces a growing number of party colleagues who accuse him of mismanagement of nursing homes during the first months of the pandemic and of harassment at work.
The chances of a successful impeachment are uncertain, as an impeachment requires a simple majority in the Lower House and two-thirds of the Senate.
