The volcanic eruption which started more than two weeks ago at Iceland, 40 kilometers from Reykjavik, was enlarged on Monday with a new lava expulsion, reported the local Meteorological Institute.
According to specialists, it is new crack, between 100 and 200 meters, which is located one kilometer from the first focus of the eruption, located in the Geldingadalir valley, around Mount Fagradalsfjall.
Images of the phenomenon which, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, “started at noon”, were broadcast live on public television RUV.
Lava from the new fault flows into another nearby small valley called Merardalir, police said. What since the start of the eruption this site has been frequented by visitors – the latest calculation, carried out this Sunday, estimates a total of 36,000 people – the authorities have decided to close the accesses and evacuate the area.
Initially, Icelandic volcanologists predicted a short-lived eruption. However, over the days, specialists changed their minds and warned that the phenomenon can last for several more weeks.
The last eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula (southwest) occurred 800 years ago with several episodes between 1210 and 1240.
