Another story of large scale power outages

1965, Ontario (Canada). On November 9, 1965, a collapse of the electricity grid connecting the United States coast to Canada left 30 million people without electricity.

The power outage of 1965 lasted 14 hours and originated from a hydroelectric plant with a defective safety device.

A line was disconnected and a chain reaction occurred. More than 30 million people were deprived of light for 13 hours in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, but also in parts of New England and New Jersey (United States).

1977, New York (United States)). On July 13, 1977, the so-called big blackout was recorded. For nearly 24 hours, 9 million people were affected by an incident that resulted in severe looting and theft, with 1,600 stores damaged and 1,000 fires caused by vandalism.

The power outage was caused by a severe storm. Lightning struck the power grid and, for security reasons, the Indian Point nuclear power plant had to be unplugged.

1998, Auckland (New Zealand). The record for the longest electricity blackout in history is the city of Auckland, New Zealand, with 66 days without electricity. The reduction in the offer only affected part of the city and the discomfort was limited to around 6,000 people.

2009, Brazil and Paraguay

2012, India

The biggest power outage of history was recorded in India in 2012. In fact, there were two cuts: the first on July 30, with 300 million people affected, and the next day a another which brought the number of wounded to 700 million.

2015, Ukraine. In Ukraine, on December 23, 2015, an unprecedented cyber attack in the world caused a major power outage in the west of the country for several hours.

2017, Central America. About 15 million people in Central America were deprived of electricity in 2017, due to a power outage caused by the fall of a transmission line in Panama. The system that connects the majority of Central American countries has been affected.
