“Today was an electoral setback but by no means a political or moral defeat. Tonight, I am going to call Mr. Guillermo Lasso by telephone to congratulate him on the electoral victory obtained today and to show him our democratic convictions, ”declared Arauz from his bunker in Quito after admitting his defeat at the polls.

The correista leader claimed his political strength as a “responsible actor in Ecuador” and promised from the opposition to remain “careful not to allow the state to be used for the benefit of the privileged few” , making clear reference to the constant criticism he exposed during Lasso’s campaign and his past as a banker.

Despite the unfavorable result, the 36-year-old economist stressed that this election “is not the end, but the beginning of the citizens’ revolution in Ecuador”, the official name of the correista movement in the country.

At the end of the afternoon, a few minutes after the publication of two exit polls with contradictory results and no official figures yet, Arauz had hastened to declare himself the winner.
