Argentina no longer included in the top 10 exporters of agricultural products

According to the latest report published by the World Trade Organization (WTO), Argentina is no longer part of the ranking of the top ten exporters of agricultural products in the world.

With the rise of Mexico, which managed to reach the tenth position and to enter the top ten for the first time, the country was moved, according to the latest data of 2018 published by the World Trade Organization (WTO ).

Countries at the top of the list are unchanged: the European Union (with exports of 681 billion dollars), the United States (172 billion dollars) and Brazil (93 billion dollars).

"This situation has to do with the fact that in 2018, Argentina had a very bad harvest and that many exports of products decreased due to a temporary problem, for climatic reasons . First by droughts, then by excessive rains at the time of harvest. I think that during this year, Argentina will again appear in the top 10 because it is recording a record harvest of 140 million tonnes, "said Marcelo Elizondo, a foreign trade specialist. and head of the board of the DNI.

"Last year was a temporary problem, but it is certain that Argentina has lower growth than other countries in the production and export of agri-food products." From a structural point of view, the investment rate of Argentina is very low at 16% of GDP (in the world it is 24%) and this means that Argentina's production capacity is not growing as in other places ", added Elizondo.

And he warned that the ability to increase Argentina's exportable food supply without addressing macroeconomic imbalances could be threatened.

The other top ten positions in the WTO have been completed with China, Canada, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Australia and Mexico.

The largest increase in agricultural exports among the ranks is China, which grew by 9% to $ 83,000 million. The other countries on the rise are Brazil and Mexico, with growth of 6%.

The largest declines in our exports were to Australia (10%, mainly due to lower sales of wheat and barley) and to Indonesia, with a 7% decline due to lower prices. exports of animal or vegetable fats (-11%) and rubber goods and related articles (-18%)

According to the WTO definition, agricultural exports include live food and animals, beverages, tobacco, vegetable and vegetable oils, fats, oilseeds, fish and raw materials such as hides and skins. , hides, rubber, cork, wood and pulp. , among others.
