A group of scientists from the Center for Research in Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology (CIBICI, Conicet – National University of Córdoba), with Researchers at the Leloir Foundation Institute have discovered a key molecular mechanism in pneumococcal infection.

The discovery, which also involved Uruguayan, American and Indian researchers, was published in the journal PLOS Pathogens for meningitis and pneumonia, it survives in the cells that it invades.
The importance of research lies in the fact that a better understanding of the mechanism of pneumococcal pathogenesis allows the study of new possibilities for development of antibiotics and vaccines.
Pneumococcus produces minor and very common infections such as sinusitis and otitis, but also serious infections M pneumonia, bacteremia – presence of bacteria in the blood – and meningitis, which causes about a million and Half of the world's deaths annually, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).
In Argentina, pneumococcus is the most common cause of pneumonia and meningitis in pediatrics: of the 50,000 pneumonia cases that occur in the country every year, half are pneumococcal, causing the death of 500 children per year, according to the Ministry of Health. 19659005] (function (d, s, id) {
