At least 15 dead and 29 injured by the fall of a wall during a wedding in Peru

At least 15 people died and 29 others were injured on Sunday while they were walking against the wall and roof of a hotel room where a wedding was taking place in Abancay town. in central Peru, official sources said.

"Up to now, the number of people killed has risen to 15 and the number of injured has been increased to 29", reported the Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) on its official Twitter account.

The agency said that heavy rains fell in Abancay, in the region of Apurímac, caused the collapse of a wall of the Alhambra hotel during the early hours of the morning, while a wedding was being celebrated in the Tamburco district, according to an Efe cable.

Indeci leader Jorge Chávez told RPP Noticias radio that the wedding was attended by about 100 people, half of whom at the time of the accident near the wall collapsed and dropped the roof.

The mayor of Abancay, Guido Chahuaylla, added that the site had sent "all possible equipment" to rescue people trapped in the rubble.

Local media pointed out that apparently, the majority of marriage attendees were teachers who were working in the province of Aymaraes.

The official Andina news agency said the wounded were taken to Abancay regional hospital and 15 of them were released for minor injuries, the rest remaining hospitalized with a limited prognosis.

The head of Civil Defense, however, noted that "the causes of the accident are under investigation", while rescue teams continue to remove debris.
