At least five people died in eastern Tajikistan on Saturday after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake. The phenomenon was felt even in the capital Dushanbe, reported the authorities of this mountainous country in Central Asia.

“The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 7:14 am local time, is located 165 km northwest of Dushanbe. Five people died ” indicated at AFP the press service of the Committee for Emergencies.

“Dozens of houses have been destroyed,” he added.

According to the Khovar government news agency, which quotes the Tajik Academy of Sciences, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9 and was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The emergency committee said the victims lived in a village in Tayikabad district. “Houses and power lines were also damaged” in three communes in this district located 220 km east of Dushanbe.
