The Argentine physicist Karen Hallberg, graduate and professor at the free public institute Balseiro, is one of five scientists awarded by the International Prize L'Oréal-Unesco for Women in Science. The prize, which selects a scientist from each region of the world, was announced yesterday and will be awarded on March 15 in Paris. This 21-year award, aimed at raising public awareness of the challenges women face in scientific research, has rewarded the five scientists "for the excellence of their research in the following fields: materials science, mathematics and computer science ". Hallberg, a researcher at Conicet, works with the quantum properties of condensed matter in the development and application of computational methods for the electronic and magnetic properties of nanoscale materials and systems.
