Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has undergone a new operation in the abdomen today. This is the fourth since he was stabbed in the middle of the election campaign last year. He will stay in the hospital until at least Thursday, he said officially.

The operation corrected a hernia of seven centimeters in diameter in the abdomen, resulting in a weakened muscle caused by previous surgeries.

The intervention, considered of medium complexity and low risk, lasted five hours, almost double what was expected.

"The patient, whose clinical condition is stable, will recover in the room" and "for medical reasons, visits will be restricted at the moment," said Vila Nova Star Hospital, located in the city ​​of San Pablo, in a revealed part. late

Presidential spokesman Otavio Do Rego said at a press conference that Bolsonaro had delegated the post to the vice president, General Hamilton Mourão, and would resume his duties when the doctors advised him.

"Legally, the president has handed over the power to the vice president and is scheduled to exercise it temporarily for five days from Sunday," Do Rego said.

He added that "the five days are a technical term and not the payback period; after this period, it will be evaluated, but the decision is technical "doctors.

The doctor who led the operation, Antonio Macedo, said that despite the delay, there was no complication.

"We can schedule two hours and delay four hours, it's normal; the important thing is not to run and everything is well done; Normally, a hernia correction surgery does not last that long, but we did not expect it to be so attached to the abdominal tissue, "he explained.

Macedo said that Bolsonaro would be evaluated daily by doctors and that, for the moment, no need for new imaging tests is planned.

He added that the president will begin a liquid regime starting Monday and that he will have restricted visits first, as well as his activities.

"Regarding visits, we will try to prevent the president from doing normal exercise, as he does in Brasilia, because doctors indicate that it is necessary to recover the care" explained Do Rego.

"Visits are not forbidden but, on the recommendation of doctors, we understand that they should be avoided," he said.

Bolsonaro was admitted to the medical center last Saturday and quickly registered and transferred to the room where he spent the night and was prepared for the intervention.

On September 6, 2018, Bolsonaro was stabbed during an act of his election campaign. The attacker, Adelio Bispo, was arrested that day and, in June of this year, he was acquitted for having considered it unavoidable for mental health reasons.

This new operation was produced in a climate of international tension due to the management of Bolsonaro in the face of mbadive fires in the Amazon and the growing internal disapproval of his government, according to several surveys.
