Brazil, the current global epicenter of the coronavirus, recorded 2,841 deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, a new daily record of victims since the start of the pandemic, which already leaves more than 282,000 deaths and 11.6 million infections in the country, reported official health sources.

According to the bulletin published by the National Council of Health Secretariats (Conass), the number of deaths on Tuesday exceeds that of Wednesday of last week (2,286 victims), which was so far the deadliest day since the start of the pandemic.

So last week’s daily average rose to 1,894 deaths, a figure that is also a record since the first case arrived in Brazil and Latin America on February 26, 2020.

Regarding infections, the Conass report indicates that 83,926 new infections were notified on the last day, with which it went to 11.603.535 the number of confirmed cases in the country.

The high averages of the last few days make Brazil one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic and place it as the second country in number of deaths and infections from Covid-19 in the world, surpassed only by the United States.

They also confirm that the Latin American giant, with its 210 million inhabitants, is currently suffering from a new wave of pandemic, more virulent and fatal, in part caused by the circulation of new variants of the virus, including the Brazilian virus that originated in the Amazon.

According to the bulletin that brings together data from Brazil’s 27 health ministries, the death rate from Covid in the country has remained at 2.4% of the population, the death rate was 134.7 deaths per 100,000 population and the incidence rate was 5,292.7 infected in the same proportion of the population.

Rising infections and hospitalizations put much of the country on the brink of health collapse, as in 24 of the country’s 27 states, the rate of intensive care unit (ICU) utilization exceeds 80%.

This serious situation has forced a large part of the regional and municipal governments to return impose measures to restrict mobility, such as curfews, partial lockdowns and business closures, to reduce the spread of the virus and prevent the imminent hospital collapse.

São Paulo, the most populous state in Brazil, with around 46 million inhabitants and which since the day before has been subject to strict mobility controls, on Tuesday broke a new daily record for deaths due to covid with 679 deceased in the past 24 hours, which already has around 65,000 deaths from the virus.
