Brazilian pharmaceutical company União Química produced first batch of Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, as the Russian Direct Investment Fund (FIDR) reported in a statement on Thursday.

“After passing the quality control procedure of the Gamaleya Center, the vaccine produced by União Química will be exported to other Latin American countries for the fight against COVID-19 ”, indicates the press release of the Russian sovereign wealth fund.

At the time, FIDR transferred the necessary technology to União Química to start production, as well as scientific documentation and biomaterials.

At the beginning of January, the president of the pharmaceutical company, Fernando de Castro Marques, traveled to Russia to visit the production centers of Sputnik V.

Then, the two sides have agreed to provide 150 million doses of Sputnik V this year in the Latin American country.

At the end of April, the creators of the Sputnik V vaccine criticized the decision of the Brazilian health regulator to disavow the importation of Russian preparation, in which they saw a “political background”. Brazil ranks third in the world for COVID-19 positives, with 15.8 million infected with the coronavirus, which claimed the lives of 440,000 people in the country.

Seven Brazilian states record more than 90% of occupied beds in intensive care units.
