Rio state’s health ministry attributed the number of recorded cases to new count requests from the federal health ministry, details of which were not disclosed.
The Secretary of State for Health “points out that these are not cases that have occurred in the last 24 hours, but have not been exposed before due to changes in the federal system (counting )”, did he declare.
“Of these cases, 62% occurred in 2021,” he said.
At least two other states –Paraiba, to the northeast, and Sao Paul, in the southeast – have seen unusual increases in the number of cases in recent days due to changes in the number of federal cases, according to Brazilian media.
Brazil has recorded a total of 590,508 deaths from the coronavirus and 21.2 million confirmed cases during the pandemic.
