The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires will use AstraZeneca vaccines that arrived in the past 48 hours to shut down vaccination schedules for people who received doses of Covishield between the last days of February and March 1.
Most of them are over 80 years old, have already completed 12 weeks since their inoculation and are short on time to receive the second dose.
The three-month postponement is arbitrary. This is a deadline that has been set by COFESA to try to reach more people with at least one dose before the start of the colder months of the year. That is why – the authorities point out – there is no problem if someone exceeds the recommended time between the two requests for a few days.
Between Sunday and Monday, Argentina received more than a million doses of AstraZeneca. The Buenos Aires government estimates that they will deliver around 90,000. So far, 153,000 porteños have received a dose of Covishield or AstraZeneca (these are the same but are made in different places) and are waiting for the second. .
At the same time, 600,000 components 1 of Sputnik V arrived in the country yesterday, and in the next few hours another flight will arrive. These inoculants will be applied in CABA to people between 55 and 59 years old with comorbidities and to strategic personnel, who are already registered pending confirmation of the shift.
Once the government of Buenos Aires guarantees these doses, it will move forward with the registration of people aged 50 to 54 with a history of health, whose registration will likely be activated this week. The idea is that they will be vaccinated with the new doses of AstraZeneca expected by the end of this week.
