Captain Diosdado Cabello, number two of Chavez, said those who rose Tuesday to expel Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from the government were "completely defeated".

"Is it possible that the right-wing media are starting to tell their people that they have failed again?" Cabello asked in his Twitter account.

"At that moment, coup leaders are completely defeated, fleeing to embbadies, hiding, no one gives face, only imperialism seeks excuses," added the vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Cabello leaked the message shortly after the Chilean government confirmed that Leopoldo López, the anti-Chavez leader, and his relatives had fled to the Chilean embbady in Caracas.

Similarly, six soldiers requested asylum in Chile – which was refused – and 25 requested asylum in Brazil, which was willing to accommodate them, according to sources from the Brazilian presidency cited by the EFE press agency.

Cabello's statement was made, however, when Parliament's interim president, Juan Guaidó, led a march of anti-Chavez sympathizers at the Miraflores presidential palace, Venezuelan and foreign media reported.
