Camp Diary: OK Leaders With Mistakes As Mahomes Learns On The Field

ST. JOSEPH, MB – The Chiefs and fans could not have asked for a better time for the first morning workout. Temperatures began in the 1960s with some high clouds. This also served as the camp's first extensive practice, so fans saw a lot of air routes, individual work and facilities. Many one against one in organized team activities, so chances to see the best match on both sides of the ball.

Highlights of the Day

Offensive Game of the Day: Yesterday it was Patrick Mahomes at Sammy Watkins, today it was Mahomes at Tyreek Hill. Hill ran a deep volley on the left touchline, and cornerback Steven Nelson did a good job. But Hill made a great adjustment to the ball while avoiding Nelson and pulling in the long pbad with both feet within the limits in front of the official.

Defensive play of the day: David Amerson took his first interception of the training camp, killing a two-minute exercise by number one offense. Mahomes stepped into the pocket looking for Travis Kelce as his outlet on the right. But he never saw Amerson underneath who jumped the path for easy ride. Amerson's excellent positioning and maintenance of the cover due to the fall of the game.

Thursday's practice served to bring down the rust and Friday morning, the work on the 2018 season has really started earnestly. A lot of individual work to start and periods of installation.

Some offensive groups were interesting to watch during exercises and team activities. The back and tight end runners are well established with Kareem Hunt and Kelce. But based on what we've seen in the past two days, it's clear Spencer Ware pulled back to No. 2 on the depth chart on the comeback, followed by Charcandrick West.

Ware took most of the photos with the first offense to the team. This was partly because the leaders wanted to limit Hunt's work. This may also mean that Ware will receive more free time during Saturday's padded workout while he's trying to limit contact on his return from knee injury.

It's a bit more confusing with the Williamses-Damien, Kerwynn and Darrel. Damien receives representatives earlier than Kerwynn, but Kerwynn leads the special teams. Darrel is here to learn, but he also looks promising. The position of this position will be interesting.

The end of the competition is another group where the competition from behind is rather intense. Demetrius Harris takes most of the cliches # 2 but Jace Amaro is right behind him. Tim Wright and Alex Ellis are both in the same group, and Ellis continues to look interesting. He continues to show his ability to open and make reliable shots.

Alex Mack, an uninitiated rookie, returned to work with the receiver group with the start of the camp after a few tight days in minicamp because of the numbers. The Chiefs have an eye on Mack as a hybrid type player who can line up in multiple positions and have good hands. He faces a tough battle but could succeed with a good side and strong special teams. Certainly a candidate of the training team.

Mahomes started 0-in-2 in a seven-on-seven job, but resumed afterwards. He concluded his first set of 3-for-6 pbading pbades with a long, perfectly thrown ball at Tyreek Hill, who pbaded safety Eric Murray and shot in the ball in a deep stride. Chad Henne looked very sharp today with some pretty jets. He started with a laser perfectly thrown on a linebacker in the box and hit Marcus Kemp in the wake on the sideline. Henne followed this with a deep cross to De & Anthony Thomas. Henne finished 3-of-4, followed by Matt McGloin who was 2-of-3.

Mahomes completed his second round 3-of-4 with a pbad interference call in the end zone. His only unfinished came on a pbad to Kelce where Murray seemed to have a pretty tight cover. Kelce wanted a flag but did not understand it. The pbad interference came on a deep ball to Chris Conley, with Anthony Hitchens and a defensive back crushing one against the other.

It is interesting to note that Conley and Thomas look very strong coming out of their wounds. The speed seems there for both, as well as good hands. Conley appears entrenched as the No. 3 wide receiver, and that's a big part for him. At one party, the Chiefs went out with Hill, Conley and Kelce came out on the left with Watkins split right and Ware in the backfield. Ware ran a model on the right and it was completely free space. This aligned trio is scary and shows how it opens opportunities on the opposite side.

After Henne completed a 3-in-4 round including a fantastic crossfade to Demarcus Robinson on the sideline, Chase Litton took his first round. He was 2-in-2 on the turn, including a deep ball to Ellis, who made a bounding grab. The battle between McGloin and Litton is another camp battle to watch. McGloin is a known quantity, a quarterback with NFL experience that coaches know can organize a small group and facilitate the offensive. The test for Litton is less about throws than he can do and he can pick up the offense. NFL teams and especially Andy Reid like No. 3 quarterback as a candidate for development. If Litton shows that he can spit the game in the caucus, make sure everyone is lined up and shows understanding of the game book he has a good chance. The pre-season games are his report card though. For the moment McGloin and Litton share third-party representatives.

The last lap of seven against seven started with the great fly Mahomes-to-Hill. Mahomes finished this 4-of-5 round. Henne was a perfect 4-of-4 on his turn, which included a great side-shot in the ring by free Kansas State rookie agent Byron Pringle. Pringle made a highlight in the first two days of play.

The depth record of the offensive line was interesting to watch. Parker Ehinger took all the representatives of the first team to the left guard, and it seems that he has finally returned to that position. Mitch Morse and Cameron Erving continue to share representatives at the first team center, but expect Morse to take that position. What is curious is what happens when Morse comes back. Will Erving pbad to the second team center? Or does he work on the other end of the line with occasional representatives of the first teams?

In the first round of 11-11, Mahomes finished 4 of 5 with a scrum. Watkins and Robinson both made beautiful recordings. Henne opened with Thomas, Robinson and Marcus Kemp as his receivers and Ellis tight-tailed. This is a very good indication of the current position of these positions. These three receivers certainly look like 4-6, and Ellis impresses at tight ends.

Henne finished 2-of-4 with McGloin 1-of-3 and Litton 0-2

with a two-minute exercise. The first drive of Mahomes finished in just four games, but not in a good way. It's there that Amerson turned the defensive highlight, scooping a pbad meant for Kelce.

After a quick three-and-out of Henne, McGloin had a little more success, but returned the ball to the ground. Cornerback Keith Reaser almost grabbed a pbad to Pringle and Amaro made a nice catch against rookie Dorian O 'Daniel.

Mahomes moved the ball a bit in his second round. Kendall Fuller almost intercepted a pbad to Chris Conley but two successful pbades to Hill and Kelce kept the ball moving. The tight end Demetrius Harris however failed to score a goal in the fourth and in the long run

. The sixth round pick Tremon Smith made a nice game on a throw towards Kemp. After a fall from Ellis and a bag, Henne missed connections in the end zone with Kemp.

Teaching Mahomes

Mahomes launched his first interception of the full training camp on Friday, and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy knows that more will come. What Reid and he care about is how the young quarterman handles his mistakes

"Would there be growing pains? Yes," says Bieniemy. "But it's okay, because sometimes, unluckily, we would not be lucky at all – he can live and learn and learn by learning things that he has not done well."

Following the interception by Amerson, Mahomes completed his next pbad at Watkins, then dodged a ball on a close choice by Fuller. Bieniemy says that he wants to see Mahomes bounce off those coins and learn what he's done wrong.

"As I always say to him," Play the next piece, "says Bieniemy." We are not worried about what happened, we want to see how you handle the next game, how do you manage with adversity. That's all that matters.

Injury Report

Running back Kareem Hunt participated early in the individual work, but did not take pictures during the team exercises. Hunt later worked with a coach on the sidelines with a medicinal balloon, and then left the training early to return to the locker room.

A spokesman for the team said the club wanted to intelligently manage Hunt's workload.

Linebacker Reggie Ragland worked on the sideline wearing a compression sleeve on his left knee. The team placed Ragland on the starting camp of the non-football injury list. He developed a swelling in his knee during his flight to Kansas City for the camp. The team keeps Ragland as a precaution and does not consider the problem as a long-term concern.

Safety Armani Watts (ankle) and the cornerback Ashton Lampkin (knee) both worked on the sidelines Friday

receiver Josh Crockett (illness) returned to practice after missing out. Thursday training

Quote of the day

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill on his speed rating 98 in Madden Football, fastest in this year's edition:

I'm glad to be the fastest but I have the impression of having 100 gears. Devin Hester was 100 years old and I'm faster than Devin Hester. Nothing against Devin Hester but I have the impression of being faster than Devin Hester then I should have 100.
