Carlos Menem has died: in the rain, the former president is veiled in Congress

Since 20, the mortal remains of former President Carlos Saúl Menem, who died this morning at the age of 90, are veiled in the burning chapel which has been installed in the Blue Hall of Congress. The funeral is open to the public, by decision of the family of the late senator.

The vice president Cristina Kirchner accompanied the relatives of the former president to receive the funeral procession at the main entrance of the Palace of Congresses, on Entre Ríos avenue. There was the daughter of the former president, Zulemite Main, his ex wife, Zulema Yoma, and his brother, Eduardo.

Applause and cries of support were heard from those present. “Come on, Menem!” A man exclaimed, visibly moved, when the troops of the Horse Grenadier Regiment removed the casket from the hearse to enter Congress.

Those who come to say goodbye to the former president must enter the Palace esplanade, Rivadavia and Entre Ríos avenues.

The planned farewell will include an intimate moment with the relatives of the ex-president and then allow the entry of leaders, friends and relatives until tomorrow, when his remains will be removed for burial.

The family of the former president decided that Congress must remain closed to the press and that the wake must be broadcast on the Senado TV signal.

The organization of the funeral is in charge of the ceremonial staff of the Upper House and Ramón Hernández, the historic private secretary of Menem, according to Senate sources told LA NACION. “He will have all the honors of a former president,” Alberto Fernández said this afternoon.
