Cereals, Meat and Milk: Production and Exchange Objectives for 2028

Latin America and the Caribbean will account for 25% of world exports of agricultural and fisheries products by 2028, but growth in trade and production will slow due to a possible decline in international demand and interior.

This is reflected in a joint report on the 2019-2028 agricultural outlook prepared by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Agriculture (FAO).

According to the report, over the next decade, growth in grain output will decline, with annual rates of about half of those observed over the past 20 years.

Despite this, the region will grow 22% of its crops and 16% of its livestock products over the next decade. These increases will be seven and two percentage points above the world average.

By 2028, the region will produce 233.5 million tonnes of maize (18% of the world total), 22.1 million tonnes of coarse grains (3% of the world total), 21.4 million tonnes of maize. rice (4% of the world total). ) and 37.3 million tonnes of wheat (11% of the world total).

Worldwide, maize production will increase by 183 million tonnes to 1311 million tonnes. The largest increases will be in China, the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Ukraine.

Soybean production will continue to increase and a new expansion of land use for oilseeds is planned at the expense of pastures, the report says.

"The increase in the area harvested from cereals, oilseeds and pulses in Argentina is due to double cropping, but it is expected that the rate of growth of annual production in the region will decrease", they indicated.

To emphasize, an increase in domestic demand for animal protein is expected. Per capita consumption of beef and pork is expected to increase by about 10% over the next decade, as well as by 12% fish and 15% birds.

By 2028, poultry consumption will be 34.2 kg per capita per year and will account for 42.1% of total meat consumption. Milk production will increase by 1.4% per year.

As for biodiesel, vegetable oil consumption in the industry is expected to reach 3.2 million tons by 2028, accounting for 75% of domestic vegetable oil consumption.
