Chris Cox, Facebook's product manager, and Chris Daniels, director of the WhatsApp service, announced Thursday that they were no longer part of the company created by Mark Zuckerberg.

And Chris Cox has long been part of the nearest circle of Zuckerberg. In 2005, he joined Facebook as one of the top 15 software engineers in the company. He played a key role in the creation of News Feed, the stream of publications that users see when they connect to the platform.

"For more than a decade, I share the same message that Mark and I have always believed: the history of social networks is not yet written and its effects are not neutral"said Cox in a farewell note to his employees on Thursday. "As builders, we must strive to understand its impact, all that is good and all that is bad, and to badume the daily work of leaning towards the positive and the good, it is our main responsibility, "he said.

For his part, Zuckerberg explained in another note to the staff that Cox had discussed the idea of leaving a few years ago. After the data leak of 2016, he agreed to stay to work on some of the problems faced by the social network. "Chris will be missed, but I am deeply grateful for all he has done to build this place and serve our community," Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg announced that the new director of WhatsApp would be Fiji Simo, previously responsible for videos, games and monetization on Facebook.

A former eBay executive, Simo grew up in France and was a student at the HEC Paris Business School and at the UCLA Anderson School of Business in California, according to an ad broadcast on a social network.
