Chapo Guzman's lawyers accused the jury of "Google news" during the trial

Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as Chapo Guzmán, has been convicted of trafficking more than 200 tons of cocaine between Mexico and the United States for 20 years, as well as marijuana, heroin and methamphetamines. The defense of the lord of drugs deployed a strategy to try to dismiss the decision: He accused some of the popular jury of "googling news" during the process.

In the statements on the site Vice NewsEduardo Balarezo, one of Chapo's lawyers, said that one of the jury members followed the news on the Internet during the three months that lasted the trial.

"If the repeated and widespread breach and outrage to the jury for the instructions given by the Court are true, Guzmán has not benefited from a fair trial." unsubstantiated and inadmissible, all the reasons why the court has warned against the use of social networks and the Internet to investigate the case, "said the defender.

The case could be complicated when it was confirmed that juries were consulting information through Google, as these investigations were closed before the verdict was issued.

The jury's decision took six days: it upheld the ten charges against the former Sinaloa cartel leader and allowed him to be sentenced to life imprisonment. El Chapo has four lawyers: Jeffrey Lichtman, Marc Fernich, Eduardo Balarezo and William Purpura.
