Chile and Uruguay: toll of infections and daily deaths

South America is under the onslaught of the second wave and its vaccination campaigns are not enough to reduce infections and deaths. Uruguay recorded this Friday a daily report of 35 deaths, while Chile added a total of 8,112 people infected in its latest report.

The increase in cases in Uruguay has increased the death toll by more than a thousand, while the bleak predictions assert that there is an imminent threat that collapse your health care system. As part of this, the country has 70% of its intensive care beds occupied by active cases of coronavirus.

This week, the eastern country has recorded 1,009 deaths and 108,188 infected since the start of the pandemic. President, Luis Lacalle Pou, who has already been vaccinated, is still hesitant to restrict movements in the country and tighten controls.

Statistics produced by the Uruguayan Ministry of Health indicate that during the week in which 100,000 cases were exceeded, 60% occurred in the last 90 days. Another negative number indicates that the 80% of the total deaths have occurred this year.

COVID-19 in Chile

Trans-Andean country set new infection record for the second day in a row with a total of 8112 infections in the last 24 hours, reaching the figure of 1,011,845 cases. In the same report, the Department of Health claimed there had been 93 deaths, for a total of 23,421 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The context forced the government to close the borders throughout the month of April and reinforced measures inside the country. So far, the vaccination campaign has successfully vaccinated 6.8 million people at least once, the most successful campaign in Latin America.

At the height of the pandemic, the Senate will vote on Sunday on the constitutional reform project which organizes the elections on May 15 and 16.
