Chile: Communist Party wins in Santiago, adds another South American capital

The opposition snatched the “Chili Vamos” pact from President Sebastián Piñera, the town halls of Santiago, Viña del Mar and the populous Maipú, among others, during the municipal elections of yesterday, which also project certain candidates for the presidential election of 2021. Thus, it will be the second quartermaster of a South American capital which will lead the PC, after the case of Montevideo.

The municipal failures received the impact that the social outbreak of 2019 had already anticipated, and the elections redistributed local political power in some cases in ways that were unexpected even for its protagonists, as in the case of thethe municipality of Santiago, which will replace its mayor Felipe Alessandri by the communist Irací Hassler.

The Chilean capital elected 32 mayors from its various municipalities, but the metropolitan region, which includes Greater Santiago and neighboring municipalities, elected 52, while 346 candidates were defined across the country. These elections also made it possible to define the situation of three presidential mayors, who obtained their re-elections – or those of their dolphins – and confirmed in a conclusive way the popular support which supports them.

The Communist Party got six elected mayors, adding 5.1% of the vote at the national level, a point more than in 2016, after a campaign which called on people to vote “without fear” for the communist options, according to the results published on the site of the electoral commission .

In this way, the CP will be in charge of the office of the mayor of Santiago, located in the historic center of the city of Santiago de Chile, the main one of the 52 municipalities that make up the province of Santiago, in the center of the metropolitan region. from Santiago.

A similar case occurred in 2020 during the Uruguayan departmental and municipal elections of November 27, where Carolina Cosse was elected mayor for the period 2020-2025, defeating the multi-colored coalition candidate, the economist Laura Raffo, and placing himself above his colleagues from Frente Amplio, Álvaro Villar and engineer Daniel Martínez (mayor for the period from 2015 to 2019). Cosse started out as a member of the PC and although he arrived in the poll from the broad front, he had the support of the PC to win the Uruguayan capital.
