Chile already works in the opening of its limits with neighboring countries and for other trips abroad. The closure of the international limits will expire, after successive extensions, on July 25.
Almost a month ago, everything was ready to announce, Thursday, June 24, the authorization, although restricted, to travel abroad. But a few hours earlier, everything changed due to the confirmation of the first case of the delta variant in the country. With all the graphics already designed for the announcement, the Chilean government has backed down and extended the shutdown of limits.
As announced by the newspaper La Tercera, there will be no more renewals, unless the pandemic surprises again. For the moment, Chile is preparing for the opening of limits from Monday July 26.
This thanks to the encouraging figures that have been recorded in recent months, positive cases at the contagious stage have fallen by 70% and nearly a third of municipalities in the country register less than 20 infectious patients with covid-19.
New measures for opening borders
What we know so far is that it will not be a total flexibility of trips abroad since Chile, On the contrary, what is sought is to make the exit of Chileans more flexible, with a series of conditions that prevent the generation of new local epidemics of coronavirus, and the entry of cases of the delta variant.
The government has designed a series of measures that include the empowerment of Chileans who already have the full vaccination program to be exempted from the four criteria that allow them today to leave the country: to carry out activities fundamental to the country, humanitarian reasons , health conditions of the applicant and journeys of no return.
In the case of people not immune to covid-19, they must continue to submit an application, as has been done so far, to obtain an exit permit from the country. According to statistics from the Secretariat for Crime Prevention of ChileBetween April 1 and July 11, 128,648 overseas travel requests were submitted, of which 55,864 were approved, or 43.4%.
Although it is still not known what will happen to those who enter the country on their return from their travels, it was thought to avoid, at least for Chileans, the stay in transit hotels and the replace by quarantine at home for those who arrive and for the rest of the inhabitants of the same home. Measure which will be controlled by a rigorous follow-up by the authorities.
The obligation to present a negative PCR test to board the plane for the return to Chile would remain. While the test that is carried out today at the Arturo Merino Benítez airport, which is applied to all people entering the country, more than 400 per day.
But with the limits Doubts remain as to the effectiveness of this measure, as there is now a 3 hour delay for passengers arriving in the country and with a larger contingent the wait at the airport to complete this process should be much longer. .
“100% of adult passengers entering through the airport are tested and then referred to a transit hotel for four days, and / or a sanitary residence if they are positive. Travelers from a sanitary hotel on day 4 must undergo a new PCR, if it is negative on the fifth day, they can leave the hotel and quarantine themselves at home until day 10. But if the PCR is positive, the passenger is transferred to a health residence, until he completes an 11-day quarantine, ”explains the epidemiology department of Seremi de Salud in the metropolitan region of Chile.
