The first case of the coronavirus in Chile was confirmed on March 3, 2020. Since then, 20,928 have died from Covid-19 in that country, 90 in the past 24 hours.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) adviser Jeanette Vega, this increase in Covid-19 figures is linked to the special holiday permit issued by the government for domestic tourism without restrictions, even to and from areas in quarantine due to a large number of active cases.

“We knew we were going to transfer the epidemic to the regions and when people returned we were going to have a very big increase in the metropolitan area,” Vega told Radio Cooperativa, where he also accused the government of ‘have sent a message. false false safety message to the population at the start of the vaccination campaign.

“We are on the rise, we have a strong positivity, a very large number of new cases and, moreover, the deaths have already started to increase and that will probably happen in the next few days,” Vega stressed.

The third wave of coronavirus infections in Chile was caused by tourism and to combat it, the government has increased quarantines in several parts of the country while advancing the vaccination plan which began in December 2020.

According to the Department of Science, 4,207,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered, 3,948,860 from the Sinovac laboratory and 321,164 from Pfizer-BioNTech, and there are already 375,057 people who have received both requests.

“The figures available to us so far indicate that 26% of the population has been vaccinated. Chile now ranks second among the countries that vaccinate the fastest against Covid-19,” said the Minister of Health Enrique Paris.

But the increase in daily cases prompted the College of Teachers to ask this Friday for the suspension of face-to-face classes, especially after more than 40 colleges and schools with positive cases were reported across the country on Thursday.

“It is absolutely necessary that classes be suspended throughout the country, this seems to us to be an urgent appeal that we address to the government of Sebastián Piñera, because given the current conditions, it is not possible to continue with classes in face-to-face, ”Carlos said at a press conference, Díaz, president of the teachers’ union.

Sebastián Piñera sent a bill to Congress to extend the state of disaster for the fourth time, in force in the country since March 18 last year and whose last extension, which was December 13, 2020, expires March 13, 2021.

In order to prolong the state of disaster, both houses must approve the extension with a simple majority quorum. The president had to resort to the legislative power because the constitutional regulation establishes that the head of state has the power to decree the said measure for only one year.

If the extension is approved, the state would be until June 30, 2021 throughout the national territory. The decree, as when it was put in place a year ago, makes it possible to restrict freedom of movement and assembly, among other measures in place to contain possible epidemics of coronavirus.
