Condemnation and warning of world leaders after the attack in Afghanistan: “The next few hours will be extremely risky”

The meeting the president was supposed to have with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET, had to be rescheduled, a U.S. official said. A few moments ago, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby confirmed that there had been at least one other explosion near the airport, at or near the Hotel Baron.

He said he can confirm that the explosion at Abbey Gate was “the result of a complex attack which left several American and civilian victims”.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has condemned the “horrible” terrorist attack and made sure that the alliance’s “priority” continues to be “to evacuate as many people as possible to a place of safety as soon as possible”.

“I strongly condemn the horrific terrorist attack outside Kabul airport. My thoughts are with all the victims and their loved ones, ”wrote the Norwegian in a message posted on the social network Twitter.

“Our priority remains to evacuate as many people as possible to a place of safety as soon as possible,” added the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance.

The European Union condemned the “cowardly and inhuman” attack on Kabul airport, which claimed the lives of at least ten people, and once again demanded safe roads that allow access to the airport in the Afghan capital, while calling for preventing the situation in this Asian country from causing a “resurgence” of terrorism.

This is what, for example, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, expresses in a message published on the social network Twitter in which he admitted his “concern” about the explosion and assured that his thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“Creating safe routes to the airport remains vital. We must ensure that the current instability cannot lead to a resurgence of terrorism, ”added the Belgian.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly and inhumane attacks on Kabul airport”, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the same digital platform.

The German also pointed out that it is “essential” to do “everything possible” to ensure the safety of people at the airport and stressed that “the international community must work hand in hand to prevent a resurgence of terrorism in Afghanistan and elsewhere”.

In the same vein, expressed the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, for whom it is “vital” to guarantee the security at the airport of the Afghan capital. “EU countries must find the strength to bring in European citizens and those who feel their security is threatened”, the Italian noticed.

More than a dozen people died in an explosion recorded on Thursday near Kabul airport and allegedly attributed to a suicide bomber, as part of a “complex attack” in which, according to the US Department of Defense, also a second explosion was recorded at a nearby hotel.

The first hypotheses point to a suicide attackAccording to sources consulted by CNN and Al Arabiya networks, although local sources also speak of possible shootings near the Abbey Gate, one of the main access points to the airfield during the evacuation process which started a week and a half ago.

At least three U.S. servicemen are among the injured, according to sources cited by Fox News. The UK government, for its part, has no evidence of UK casualties, just as the Spanish Ministry of Defense has also ruled out casualties.
