Continues the "Shackleton Curse": they have suspended the search for the mythical ship Endurance, sunk in Antarctica

Stamina was the mythical icebreaker in which had failed the imperial trans-Antarctic Imperial Expedition, later known as Endurance Expedition. Led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, he intended to cross the Antarctic continent by land for the first time in his history.

The brig, consisting of three masts, was built at Sandefjord, Norway, in 1912.. The crossing left London on August 1, 1914, but had to be suspended in 1915, after the ship was trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea in Antarctica, where it finally sank.

Mensun Bound, marine archaeologist and treasure hunter born in the Falkland Islands, led the Weddell Sea Expedition, which was meant to regain endurance. He did it on board the specialist icebreaker scientist, S. A. Agulhas II.

The ship arrived this week at the sinking placebut extreme weather conditions and complex geography have prevented it from carrying out research tasks.

"The weather was stuck and the sea ice conditions were deteriorating, resulting in the loss of the AUV7, one of the advanced autonomous underwater vehicles used to locate the ship, "said the team in a statement.

After S. Agulhas II was trapped in the ice, the captain decided to suspend the crossing.. "As a team, we are clearly disappointed at not having achieved our quest for endurance," said Bound.

"Like Shackleton before us," he continued, "who described the Endurance Cemetery as" the worst part of the worst sea in the world ", our well-directed plans were overtaken by the rapid movement of the ice and by what Shackleton called "the bad conditions of the Weddell Sea".& # 39; "

The escape of the Endurance crew after leaving the ship is considered one of the greatest achievements in the history of navigation. The members of the expedition first had to make a very difficult sled trip across the Weddell Sea, then they went by boat to Elephant Island, in the Piloto Pardo Islands archipelago, in Chile.

There, they had to rebuild a small boat. Shackleton and five other men crossed the Atlantic in South Georgia to get help. It was an epic journey.

The 22 men who remained on Elephant Island were rescued by the Chilean ship Yelcho, commissioned by Luis Pardo Villalón, August 30, 1916. It had elapsed 22 months since his arrival on the island of South Georgia. They all survived.
