Coronavirus: Cuba is the first country in the world to vaccinate two-year-olds | The inoculations are carried out with the doses of Sovereign 02

Cuba has added a new step to its scientific and medical history: after developing its own vaccines against covid-19, almost in record time, started immunizing children and adolescents aged 2 to 18. Vaccination with Sovereign 02 began on Friday September 3 and coincides with the resumption of the school year 2021-2022.

In this way, the island became the first country in the world to vaccinate the population from the age of two, after the State Control Center for Drugs, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED) gave the green light for the emergency use of this drug for application in children.

Olga Lidia Jacobo, director of the Cuban regulatory authority, explained that the approval came after a “very rigorous” evaluation process.

350 children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 participated in the study conducted by the Finlay Vaccine Institute and, after the final results, the entity determined that, “in accordance with the provisions of the regulations and provisions in force (. ..), it has been shown that (Sovereign 02) meets the quality, safety and immunogenicity requirements for this population group“.

The regimen applied in the test included two doses of Soberana 02 with an interval of 28 days, in addition, an additional dose of Soberana Plus on day 56. The drug showed 91.2% efficacy against symptomatic disease in its analysis. phase III.

Vaccination campaign

According to what was reported by the media France 24, representatives of the Ministry of Health indicated that the pediatric campaign is expected to end on November 15 and will run “gradually” and “intensely”.

On the other hand, according to what was reported by the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, government seeks to reach November with 92.6 percent of population vaccinated.

So far, around four million Cubans, out of a total of 11.2 million, have already received all three doses of Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus as a booster.
