The Metropolitan region of Chile, which includes its capital, Santiago, surpassed 4,000 daily coronavirus infections for the first time in more than 11 months and the country has reached the second highest number of new positive cases since the start of the pandemic, despite the advanced vaccination campaign.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, 4,245 new positives were detected in the last day, the worst number since June 14, 2020.

Healthcare in the metro area started raising the alarm a few weeks ago and that’s why more than half of the municipalities have regressed under the Plan Pas à Pas, the phased health regime with which the country is coping with the pandemic.

The region had not exceeded this barrier of 4000 contaminations since the first wave, more precisely since June 19 of last year (4,421), that is to say in 11 months and 15 days.

Across the country, the Health portfolio reported 8,867 new cases in the past 24 hours, the second highest figure in the pandemic. Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Chile had 1,420,266 infected people, including 1,342,080 cured.

Chile is one of the fastest growing countries in the mass immunization process, with a vaccination program that includes different vaccines: Pfizer, Sinovac, AstraZeneca and Cansino.

“We have succeeded in vaccinating more than 8 million people with the two doses, representing more than 53% of the target population of 15.2 million people“, said Chilean President Sebastin Piera.

So far, the Chilean vaccination strategy has accumulated 71.2% inoculated with the first dose and has already started the vaccination phase for people aged 23 to 25 years.
