The cases of coronavirus are not decreasing in the UK and there is growing concern in England about the impending saturation of the health system. Faced with this situation, hospitals across the country are evaluating the transfer of some of their patients to nursing homes or other alternative centers, as they do not have enough beds to cover the persistent demand.

“The situation is getting worse very quickly. Last week we saw 5,000 new COVID-19 patients arrive at hospitals, the equivalent of 10 complete establishments ”, he declared on the radio station. BBC Chris Hopson, director of NHS Providers – the public body responsible for supplying medical facilities.

“We are reaching a point where the hospital beds are full”, alerted the owner of the entity. For this reason, he explained that many facilities have already started looking for units available in nursing homes and other facilities to which they will refer their patients.

According to data collected by the Health Services Journal, the short-term outlook is not very encouraging. Even though the number of patients with COVID-19 has increased based on lower projections and an increase in hospital capacity has been achieved, on January 19, there would be a deficit of 2,000 beds general and intensive care in London health centers.

For now, the truth is that infections in the UK are not only not declining, but have increased since the discovery in December of the new strain of the disease. Only in the last 24 hours the registered country 52,618 new cases and 1,162 deaths, for which it adds 2,889,419 infected people and 78,508 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Amid the worsening epidemiological situation, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson focused its health strategy on the national quarantine imposed on England on Tuesday and the acceleration of the vaccination campaign.

“We are in a race against time. But I can guarantee you that we are doing everything to vaccinate as many people as possible, ”the official promised at a press conference.

To date, the UK has applied vaccines developed by Pfizer / BioNTech and AstraZeneca / Oxford to nearly 1.5 million people. At the same time, the executive aims to achieve the goal of vaccinating all over 70s and health workers by mid-February, the equivalent of about 14 million people.

Regarding the coronavirus epidemic in the territory, Johnson estimated that the current health situation is “worse than during the first wave, and it is proving much more difficult to manage”. For this reason, he called on citizens to “Take seriously” the new quarantine. Otherwise, he warned that “the impact on healthcare across the country could be catastrophic.”
