Coronavirus: WHO says the world has entered a high plateau of infections | 4.5 million new cases are registered per week

As the anti-covid vaccination campaign progresses around the world, The World Health Organization (WHO) says the world has entered a plateau of contagions, because once again infections are on the rise in various parts of the world.

“Cases have reached a plateau around the world, but this plateau shows a fairly high level of intensity, recording between 4.4 and 4.5 million cases each week, figures which are obviously below real levels ”, reports this Tuesday Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Chief Epidemiologist.

The manager indicated that every week in the world there are between 67,000 and 68,000 deaths and added that a growth of cases contagion by the coronavirus and the deaths associated with this disease in South America and North America.

As for Europe, there is a decrease in covid-19 cases, but the number of deaths is increasing, while in Asia morbidity and mortality are decreasing.

Although the situation is different depending on the region, Van Kerkhov said the scenario is “worrying”, especially since “the pandemic has been going on for 20 months and we have the instruments to fight” against it.

Worldwide, more than 221 million cases of infection have been recorded, including more than 4.5 million deaths according to Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

On the other hand, more than 5.352 million doses of covid-19 vaccines have been administered worldwide. Since March 11, 2020, the WHO has classified the coronavirus disease caused by the new SARS-CoV-2 detected at the end of 2019 as a pandemic.
