Coronavirus: WHO’s devastating warning for uncontrolled increase in cases worldwide | the Chronicle

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, referred to strong progress of the coronavirus pandemic and warned the world is approaching the highest infection rate on record to date during the pandemic.

In a briefing, Ghebreyesus noted that new cases of Covid-19 per week have almost doubled globally in the past two months. “Cases and deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate“, he underlined.

Thursday, 13,646 new deaths and 809,849 contagions were recorded worldwides. The countries that have recorded the most deaths according to the latest official reports are Brazil with 3,560, India (1,185) and the United States (974).

The death toll in the United States stands at 565,289 with 31,495,652 infections. After the United States, the deadliest countries are Brazil with 365,444 deaths and 13,746,681 cases, Mexico with 211,213 deaths (2,295,435 cases), India with 174,308 deaths (142,991,917 cases) and the United Kingdom, with 127,191 deaths (4,380,976 cases).

“Cases and deaths continue to increase at an alarming rate”

Among the hardest-hit countries, the Czech Republic has the highest death rate, with 264 deaths per 100,000 population, followed by Hungary (254), Bosnia (235), Montenegro (225) and Bulgaria (214).

Since the start of the epidemic, Europe has added 1,016,003 deaths (47,440,536 infections), Latin America and the Caribbean 852,118 (26,812,010), United States and Canada 588,779 (32,589,214), Asia 292,169 (20,566 .289), Middle East 120,787 (7,161,469), Africa 117,015 (4,397,613) and Oceania 1,020 (40,992).

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of tests performed has increased dramatically and tracking techniques have improved, resulting in an increase in reported infections.

However, the number of cases diagnosed only reflects a portion of all infections, less severe or asymptomatic cases remain undetected.
