Cubs should continue to buy beyond Jesse Chavez

Brandon Morrow again on the injured list, it is important that the Chicago Cubs continue to buy in addition to Jesse Chavez

The Chicago Cubs were forced to buy a raiser to Jesse Chavez, once they discovered that Brandon Morrow would need another pbadage on the 10-day invalid list with biceps inflammation. Unfortunately, this is not new to the Cubs.

Morrow spent time on the DL last month because of back spasms that he first suffered while undressing. Granted, this is not an everyday injury, but it proves that Morrow is vulnerable to injury.

He has never played more than 60 games as a reliever, his 45th tightest match last year with the Dodgers. The sad thing is that it was extremely effective when the Cubs came together when they were healthy.

Up to 2018, he has recorded 22 saves and a 1.47 ERA in his career. The addition of Jesse Chavez should help the Cubbies club but that will not be enough to replace Morrow.

In 30 games with Texas, Chavez has a 3.50 ERA, which is his best since 2014 when he was with Oakland. Chavez has only three stops in his career, so he will not really fill the hole that Morrow leaves, but he adds depth.

The Cubs must remain active and chase someone who can act as a loved one, or even a man once Morrow returns from his bicep inflammation. Fortunately for the Cubs, there are some rentals that have closing experience.

In New York, Jeurys Familia is in the last year of his contract. With the Mets loophole, maybe the Cubs could offer an intermediate perspective to the Mets in exchange for Familia's services from late July to October

This year, Familia has a 2.88 MPM with 17 saves. Familia is only two years after a season of 51 saves and a season of 47 saves three years ago. He will certainly make you sweat with him on the mound, but he has been a more effective for four years now, and probably would not cost much to get.

Then, in the American League, you have the Orioles starting a fire sale. Zach Britton, who is also on the last year of his contract, will probably be available. The 30-year-old athlete, only four years old, has done some work this year, but he's already twice in the star team, with three consecutive seasons of 30 years and older from 2014 to 2016.

A move to Familia or Britton ensures that the Cubs' paddock is set for October. As the second half begins, Chicago finds itself in three games in Central NL. If they want this division crown, and a chance to win the pennant, they will have to reinforce that paddock, and they should have the pieces to do it.
