Hundreds of naked motorcyclists circulated Saturday in downtown Mexico City to express their fragility in front of motorists and demand more respect and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
The 14th edition of the Nudist Round of the Mexican capital, organized by the global collective World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), kicked off at 12 am local time (17 GMT) in the famous Monument to the Mother of Mexico City, said the 39 Efe agency.
There, many visual artists painted all kinds of slogans on the torso, face and bads of the participants, most of them on bikes, although people wearing skates also approached.
The route, of about 17 kilometers, crossed the main arteries of the capital, such as Paseo de la Reforma and Central Eje, to reach the Zócalo, the main square of Mexico City.
Respect for cyclists and pedestrians, the use of human transportation, the benefits of physical exercise and the fight against the emission of gaseous pollutants were among the demands made by cyclists.
Along the way, some pedestrians were surprised to observe the cyclists, most of them half-naked, but a few chose not to wear a clothes press.
The Road Safety Information Center of the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat reported on the progress of the race via Twitter and suggested alternative routes for drivers.
According to the unofficial story of militant groups, 18 cyclists died in the Mexican capital as a result of road accidents.
Mexico City has an extensive network of public bicycles, although bike lanes are limited to some of the main avenues of the capital.
Last month, due to high levels of pollution, the capital's government triggered an environmental emergency declaration that limited car traffic in the city for a few days.
