Demonstrations in Haiti: Nine dead, a paralyzed country and a silent president

The protests, which have increased insecurity in the Caribbean country and created a climate of chaos and uncertainty, take place in the middle of the night. a serious economic crisis, aggravated by a sharp depreciation of the gourd, the official currency, and by the electricity crisis caused by a shortage of gasoline.

The economy of Haiti, where more than half of the 10 million people survive on less than $ 2 a day, rose only 1.4% in 2018, one of the lowest rates in the region and well below the 2.2% forecast at the beginning of last year, then reduced to 1.8%.

The protesters are also demanding justice for alleged irregularities in the Petrocaribe program, through which Venezuela supplies oil to the country at moderate prices.
