Despite advances in vaccination, Sydney is unable to contain the Delta variant and has again extended the strict quarantine by one month

The government of Australia announced this Friday that will further extend confinement of Sydney for one more month due to the increase in cases of coronavirus in the most populous city in the country, despite advances in vaccination.

The expansion of the Delta variant COVID-19 worldwide has alarmingly increased contagion, and several countries have stepped up measures for months in an attempt to contain it.

Australia, which often enforces strict quarantines, continues to register hundreds of cases a day despite widespread isolation in Sydney. Started June 26 and it was going to end on August 27, but this Friday the authorities announced the extension for another month.

In the last 24 hours New South Wales recorded 644 infections and 4 deaths, most in southwest and western Sydney, where twelve towns will be subject from Monday to a night curfew and a one hour outdoor exercise limit.

State authorities have also announced the imposition of the compulsory use of face masks outdoorswith the exception of people who exercise statewide. The restrictions also apply to rural areas.

The head of government of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian, announced this Friday, at a press conference in the Australian capital, that the police will have “additional powers to maintain compliance” with the restrictive measures, among which are force people to isolate themselves at their home.

In contrast, the neighboring state of Victoria reported on Friday 55 positive cases, most of them located in the city of Melbourne, who is going through sixth isolation so far this year. The quarantine will last until September 2, as will the Australian Capital Territory, which includes Canberra. The outbreaks were caused by the Delta variant, according to local media.
