You have heard this before, and many times. If the New York Jets can develop their young quarterback, the team has a chance to surprise in the AFC East.
Sam Darnold was selected with the third pick in the NFL draft in April, and while the Jets do not put much public pressure on him to jump into the fight and become the starting quarterback early in the game. his rookie season is exactly what they would like to happen.
Unless Josh McCown, or perhaps newcomer Teddy Bridgewater, on the start of the season under center. While these two alternatives are pretty decent, the ideal scenario involves their USC rookie quarterback with arm and high level of talent.
The first thing the Jets must see is that it's not Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith or Christian Hackenberg. All Jets fans know that the team has a succession of busts at the quarterback and this can not continue. The loyal fans of the team have seen too much misery over the years.
If Darnold can play pretty well this summer and is able to get rid of McCown in the fourth or fifth week, he should find some decent targets. Jermaine Kearse makes the most of his abilities and it is very difficult for the opposing cornerbacks to cover a face-to-face.
Quincy Enunwa missed all of last season after suffering a pre-neck injury. If he can return to the starting lineup and stay there, Enunwa will prove to be a huge target. He caught 58-857-4 in 2016, and he can use these numbers as a starting point for 2018.
Terrelle Pryor at the other reception spot is another threat, and if he could never play at its size-speed ratio – It's 6-4, 228 pounds and runs 4.4. 40 – the Jets would have a real contributor.
One thing the Jets need this year is a solid racing game. This is important for McCown or Bridgewater, and it's even more important when Darnold comes on the scene. The diversity that will bring a solid ground attack is invaluable for a young quarterback
While the Jets seem to have several capable rearers in the former Brown Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, Eljah McGuire and Thomas Rawls , they do not have a superstar – or even a star – at the position. It is difficult to get off an attack that has no bread and butter, especially when the team is waiting for their young quarterback to grow into their own skin.
The offensive line was a problem a year ago by giving up to 47 sacks, and even though the signature of the former Spencer Long Center of Redskin is a positive development, it does not come back. there is no reason to think that there will be a complete turnaround. Ensuring that the offensive line is professional and competent every week should be one of the top priorities of the offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates
If the Jets can rearrange themselves in all these areas, they could have a better … decent offense. However, when you have so many question marks, it's hard to believe that the pbad marks will appear on the report card at the end of the day.
Head Coach Todd Bowles does not have any illusions. Former star Muhammad Wilkerson is in contention for the Packers, and the Jets rely on Nathan Shepherd, third rookie, to move from Fort Hays State to play regularly in the NFL.
The team brought Avery Williamson of the Titans to anchor the team of linebackers. The rest of the linebackers are largely unproven, but if Williams plays at a high level, his comrades should be able to follow his example and move on.
The high school seems a little better than in previous years, as Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are the big hitters at strong security and free security, respectively. Maye has the kind of instinct and intelligence needed for his position, while Adams is able to put his footprint on any game.
But the key will boil down to the combination of Bowles and Darnold. The coach-quarter situation does not look exactly like Bill Walsh-Joe Montana, but again, it's not necessary.
Bowles is not a quarterback whisperer, but he has to set the tone with his young flagman. a way. He must make his expectations clear and he can not give the kickoff to his recruiter.
The most difficult approach should work, and Bowles should be able to look at his young interlocutor in the eye and tell him exactly what to do
where he can not no, the Jets will look for another head coach pretty quickly.
