According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the patient arrived at the hospital with a swollen eye, groin pain and confusion. During the test, the doctors checked that these symptoms, as well as the convulsions, were caused by Taenia Solium, a parasite transmitted by the consumption of raw or undercooked pork.
This worm is able to lay eggs and reproduce throughout the body what is called cysticercosis. The case of the young man in India was so aggressive that he died after being hospitalized for two weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that tapeworm infection was the leading "preventable" cause of epilepsy in developing countries. It mainly contracts during the consumption of raw food and ingestion of water contaminated with parasite eggs.
