The city of Ushuaia will no longer be the southernmost of the world, due to a change in Chilean legislation. The now trans-national city of Puerto Williams will become a city and "steal" the title of the provincial capital of Argentina. It is located 10 kilometers further south than the Argentine city.
According to the latest census of INE, Puerto Williams has 2063 inhabitants. Since March, it will become a "city" and will be the last city in the world.
In this context, the Mayor of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic, José Fernández, said: "We are very pleased with this news because it will bring many benefits to its inhabitants." In addition to causing an increase in tourism because it will be an emblematic place, this new category will provide access to other types of state infrastructure projects, "he told the El Mercurio newspaper.
Puerto Williams is located on the north coast of Navarin Island and on the south coast of Beagle Channel. It was founded in 1953, but under the name Puerto Elisa. It was only on August 22, 1956 that it was renamed Puerto Williams in memory of British sailor Juan Williams, who planted the Chilean flag in the Strait of Magellan in 1843.
