US President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the last bastion of the terrorist group "Islamic State" in Syria "will fall tonight". It is the city of Al Baghouz, where jihadists have recently fought against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the coalition of forces backed by the United States.
In front of reporters at the White House, Trump showed two maps of the Middle East to comment on his government's achievements in the fight against ISIS. With the plans printed on the same page on top of each other, the president explained that the territories marked in red were those where terrorists operated in 2016 and those where they operate now.
"All in red, it's ISIS, when I badumed power, it was a disaster, now down there is the same place but there is no red, only a small place that will fall tonight "the president told reporters.
In December, Trump unexpectedly announced that he would pull out thousands of US troops from Syria and Afghanistan, a decision that drew criticism from lawmakers and his own national security team. But the president has taken his turn for his exact retirement plan in time since, and finally agreed to leave 400 soldiers in Syria.
Trump reiterated the decision to reporters on Wednesday and said two groups of 200 soldiers would remain in Syria stationed in different parts of the country.
The Baghouz enclave, located in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, is only a small part of the territory, 700 meters long by 700 meters wide. It is located on the side of the Euphrates, close to the Iraqi border.
