Donald Trump congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday for his victory in Israel's general election and said the victory makes possible the possibility of a peace negotiation with the Palestinians.
"The fact that Bibi (nickname Netanyahu) won, I think this will allow us to see a very good action now in terms of peacehe told reporters at the White House.
"Everyone thinks that there can be no peace in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians. I think we have a chance and we now have a better chance now that Bibi won"he added.
This victory allows Netanyahu, 69, to become by the end of this year the Prime Minister with more time in power in the history of the State of Israel, surpbading the legendary David Ben Gurion . According to projections, his party, the Likud, should get about the same number of seats (35) as his main opponent, the blue and white party of former military officer Benny Gantz, 59 years old. But the Likud and a small group of right-wing parties, united in coalition, they would get about 65 seats in parliament (out of a total of 120), enough to consolidate a majority and form a new government.
Netanyahu mentioned every time that he could be close to the President of the United States and went to Washington in the latter part of the campaign.
At the end of the election campaign, the Prime Minister made a clear appeal to his most radical electorate stating that he was ready to annex Israeli settlements in the West BankOccupied Palestinian Territory for half a century. The eventual annexation would make such a two-state solution, that is, a coexisting Palestinian state with Israel, almost impossible.
This week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused Tuesday to reaffirm US support for a Palestinian state, a traditional position of the State Department. "In the end, Israelis and Palestinians will decide how to solve it," said a US diplomat questioned on the issue in Congress.
