Dozens of coffins floating in the Ligurian Sea surprised Italy

Dozens of coffins have been found floating in the Ligurian Sea today, payable at the detachment of a plot of the Camogli cemetery, in the city of Genoa, in northwestern Italy, due to the erosion of the land on the cliff, the ANSA news agency reported today.

Ligurian Coast tourist town residents and officials watched in disbelief how the coffins floated in the sea.

At the site of the collapse were teams of divers, Coast Guard boats and firefighters, who began Operation pTo retrieve the coffins and take them to the port, although some were stuck between the cliff and the earth accumulated by the collapse.

It is estimated that there are several dozen coffins dragged by the landslide and fell into the sea.

The Camogli Cemetery is located on the coast of Genoa, about 50 meters above sea level. The landslide also destroyed and swept away two chapels with graves inside in the sea.

It seems, landslide was caused by erosion of the cliff below the cemetery area, probably made worse by the violent storm surges that have hit Liguria in recent years.

Tino Revello, Camogli’s public works adviser, told ANSA that the area had been under observation for a long time and that work was underway to consolidate the cliff below the cemetery.

“The area had been fenced off, as rare cracks had been heard in recent days”he explained.
