Drama in Peru: 13 people from the same family died from coronavirus

Helen Yáñez is living a nightmare: Thirteen of his relatives have died from the coronavirus and his father, also infected, is now struggling to survive without finding a place in a local hospital. The dramatic case occurs in the city of Pisco, Peru, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in the world.

The young i don’t know how the chain of infections started. But, little by little, all the members got infected. And, in a few months, 13 of them died from serious lung infections and lack of beds in local health centers. The last family member to die was his 74-year-old grandfather.

From the San Juan de Dios hospital, Yáñez made a desperate appeal to politicians: “What about the authorities? With all these candidates who have run million dollar campaigns and cannot come here, where are all these voters who have been asked to vote. I don’t want to lose my father“He said in statements to Hello Peru.

“My father could only have a normal room. You have a reserved diagnosis and do not respond to treatment. In the case of my aunt, she was drowning and I had to create a scandal so that they could transfer her to an intensive care bed, ”she denounced desperately.

With the frightening rhythm of one dies every 5 minutes, Peruvians face the worst time of the pandemic with an apparent easing of prevention measures, despite the fact that the Brazilian variant of covid-19 -the Manaus strain- accelerates contagion in this extended second wave.

Although Peru has tried almost every measure applied to mitigate the pandemic – strict quarantine, border closures, curfews, compulsory use of masks and face masks, among others – nothing seems to stop the advance of the virus, which officially caused the death of more than 58,000 people in one year.

So far in April, the Department of Health reported nearly 6,000 people died, which exceeds the deaths of last February, which were of 5,500 people.

Peru recorded the highest number of deaths from the pandemic on Sunday: 433. It is, moreover, the country which today suffers the most excess deaths in relation to its population throughout the world. The towns of Lima and Callao are the most affected.
